GAUL - CELTIC Aedui. Quinaris featuring a standing warrior and the inscription DVBNOCOV / DVBNOREX, Class I ND (c. 52 BC). Obverse: [DVBNO]COV. Female head facing right, with straight hair in plaited strands falling in braids down her neck. Reverse: On the right, the inscription [DV]BNORE[X], running from bottom to top. A Gallic warrior on the left, wearing a helmet (seen from behind), marching to the left and holding a wild boar standard with both hands. DT.3211 - LT.5026; Silver – 1.89 g – 12 mm – 7 h Acquired from Bourgey in 2003. Features a very fine effigy on the obverse, in high relief. The reverse is highly detailed, showing the boar-bearer viewed from behind (?) and the almost complete legend. Beautiful shiny grey patina. Superb. Dumnorix was a high-born Aeduan chieftain, the younger brother of the druid Diviciacos and son-in-law of Orgétorix, King of the Helvetii. Although he came from a Gallic people allied with the Romans, he plotted against Julius Caesar and refused to follow him in his invasion of Britannia (now Great Britain), according to *The Gallic Wars* (5.6). Caesar had him killed in 54 BC.
