GAUL - CELTIC Aedui. Denarius or quinarius bearing the inscription ‘VIIPOTAL’ with a warrior on the reverse (c. 60–50 BC). Obverse: Female bust wearing a diadem, draped to the left. Reverse: VIIPOTAL. A Gallic warrior standing facing forwards, in military attire, holding a spear and a wild boar standard in his right hand and an oblong shield in his left. DT.3215 = this specimen! – LT.4484; Silver – 1.86 g – 16 mm – 6 h Acquired from a Poinsignon and Pesce auction by tender on 30 June 1987, lot no. 433, then purchased from Poinsignon in December 2002. This is the specimen illustrated in the *Nouvel Atlas* no. 3215. On a very large blank, both the obverse and reverse are complete and well detailed. The strike is powerful, with a concave blank. Slight grey patina. Superb. For Viipotal or Vepotalos, chieftain of the Pictones or, more likely, the Aedui – the latter being the attribution currently accepted following the discovery of the Vernon hoard
