Description
GAUL - CELTIC
Aedui. Quinaris bearing the inscription ANORBOS / DVBNO [REX] ND (second third of the 1st century BC and the Gallic Wars).
Obverse: AN[ORBO] above the face. Helmeted head facing right; the helmet adorned with semicircular arches, with a beaded collar.
Reverse: DΛB[NO] beneath a galloping horse with girth, facing right.
DT.3221 - LT.4972; Silver - 1.91 g - 12 mm - 3 h
Acquired from Seb [Sébastien Prat] in 2009.
Stylised face with the nose, mouth and chin formed by a line of besants. Slight loss of metal in the helmet. With a lovely grey patina. Superb.
This coinage is attributed to the Aedui chieftain Dumnorix, mentioned by Caesar. This type of quinarius is more varied than it appears, with different legends on the obverse – ANOR / ANORB / ANORBO – and sometimes a small ring beneath the horse on the reverse.
