GAUL - CELTIC Aedui. Quinaris bearing the inscription COIOS / ORGIITIRIX, Class III ND (after 52 BC). Obverse: COIOS. Helmeted head facing left, modelled on ROMA. Two rows of decorative grooves on the helmet and a torque around the neck. Reverse: ORGIITIRIX. Harnessed horse facing left. DT.3229 - LT.4819; Silver - 1.88 g - 14 mm - 11 h Acquired from CB [Claude Burgan] in 1989. On an oblong flan, with the full profile on the obverse! The inscription on the reverse is complete. With an antique patina with bluish highlights. Superb. In 61 BC, the Helvetian chieftain Orgétorix led his people towards the Saintonge region and, to this end, forged alliances with his neighbours, the Sequani and the Aedui. According to Cassius Dio, he was thwarted in his plans and took his own life. One of his daughters married Dumnorix, king of the Aedui.
