GAUL - CELTIC Aedui. Epigraphic quinary coin featuring a lion, Class III, with the inscription AMIV(S) / AMBARI ND (1st century BC). Obv. [A]MIV(S). Head facing right, the mouth formed of two bezants, with the remains of a quiver behind the shoulder; a smooth circle around the edge, itself set within a grain border. Rev. [A ?]MBARI. Lion advancing to the right, tail tucked under its belly, on a ground line. DT.3271B = this specimen! - LT.-; Silver - 1.73 g - 14 mm - 5 h This is the specimen illustrated in the *Nouvel Atlas* no. 3271B. The strike is off-centre on the obverse. The metal is crystallised in the fields. With an antique patina with golden highlights. Extremely rare. TTB. The inscription [A]MBARI is difficult to read (possibly [RO]MBARI in our view) but would suggest that this specimen belongs to the Ambarri, ‘Friends of the Aedui’, who occupied what is now the department of Ain.
