GAUL - CELTIC Lingones. Denarius or quinarius [CONTE] ND (80–50 BC). Obverse: Helmeted head facing left, within a double wreath. Reverse: CONTE, retrograde legend, N and T linked, E without a central bar. A bridled and saddled horse on the left, with an ‘S’ in front; below, a severed hand (?). DT.3200 – LT.5053; Silver – 1.96 g – 13 mm – 8 h The rare examples of this type show the obverse to be off-centre. The reverse is complete, with a severed hand beneath the horse (?). The patina is grey with bluish highlights. TTB / Superb. This type, originating from the denarius region, is attributed to the Lingones. As the authors of the *Nouvel Atlas* point out: “this very rare denarius has been found in several hoards alongside the quinarii of KALETEDOY”
