Description
GAUL - CELTIC
Bellovaci. Quinarius with a horse, Class II type derived from the Pagus Catuslugi ND (second third of the 1st century BC and the Gallic Wars).
Obverse. Highly stylised head comprising an eye, with an arch above it, a small wave below, a transverse row of laurel leaves in a chevron pattern, and below that two open crescents with rounded ends.
Reverse: Horse facing right, at a walk; an X-shaped cross in front of the mouth, a small ring below and a sort of animal above.

Acquired from L.-P. Delestrée in 2007. This is the specimen illustrated in his book, *Monnayage et peuples gaulois du Nord-Ouest*, 1996, pl. 42, no. 15.
A specimen with fine relief and all motifs intact, covered in a delicate grey patina. Rare. Very Good to Superb.
The ‘star’ tri-metallic set comprises the 42A series in gold, the 42B series in silver and the 42C series in bronze. These series must have been issued mainly in the vicinity of the sanctuary at Digeon, which is thought to have served as a mint for a small, as yet unidentified tribe, to the west of the Bellovaci’s territory. In the 42B series, Class II comprises a variant in silver, or an imitation, originating from the pagus Catuslugi.
