GAUL - CELTIC Ambians / Western Belgium. Quarter-stater depicting a bearded head, Class II ‘stork-style’ ND (2nd century BC). Obverse: Apollonian profile to the right, with luxuriant, curly hair and a beard; scrolls on the neck. Reverse: Chariot on the right, drawn by a single horse with horn-like ears, surmounted by a highly stylised charioteer with his arm raised. Beneath the horse, the remains of a stork. Ground line with :::::::: below, recalling the legend. DT.13 = this specimen! – BN.8384 – Scheers 77; Gold – 1.82 g – 12.7 mm – 1 h From an Elsen auction in June 2001. This is the specimen illustrated in the *Nouvel Atlas* no. 13. Attribution to the Ambiani is uncertain. A spectacular type, featuring a bust with exuberant hair.
