Description
GAUL - CELTIC Ambiens / Western Belgium. Silver lamellar coin, Class I with seahorse, Variant 1 (realistic profile), undated (early second third of the 1st century BC). Obverse. Helmeted head facing right, with an ‘esse’ in front of the mouth and a beaded chinstrap curving beneath the chin. Reverse. Horse facing right, surmounted by a stylised victory figure formed of a ball-tipped ‘esse’ surmounted by a sort of insect; in front of the horse, a ball-tipped cross; a seahorse on the left, facing forwards, between the horse’s legs. DT.188 (Series 31 A) – LT. missing – Scheers 329; Silver – 0.99 g – 16 mm – 12 h A wide flan, slightly scyphate and complete with all details, with good centring. The patina is dark. Very fine quality for this type. Superb.
