Description
GAUL - CELTIC Ambiens / Belgium. Short-blank stater, derived from the wide stater ‘with a stylised Indian head’, Class I ND (first half of the 1st century BC). Obverse. Highly stylised laureate head facing right, hair in crescent shapes at the temples and in bear’s paws towards the back above the laurel wreath, eyes in hollowed-out crescent shapes. Reverse: A horse facing right with the remains of a wheel beneath the tail and a Victory figure reduced to globules above; a globule between the legs; the exergue is decorated with a ‘wolf’s teeth’ pattern, the triangles centred on a semi-circular dot. DT.161 - LT.8603 - Scheers 90; Gold – 6.39 g – 17.5 mm – 12 h The strike is centred, with both sides well-preserved. A tiny crack in the corner of the obverse. The fields have been lightly cleaned beneath a light patina. Superb.
