Description
GAUL - CELTIC Ambiens / Belgium. Double-sided stater with a ‘short flan’, Class II ‘western variants’, variety 5 ND (120–50 BC). Obverse. Stylised head facing right, comprising a laurel wreath, locks of hair drawn back, a central anchor ending in two pointed crescents forming the eyes, and a sort of cornucopia below. Reverse: A horse galloping to the right, with rounded joints. Above, a rounded chevron with a small ring, a circular motif, beaded at the bottom, tapering and rising, surmounted by a small ring (“sickle-shaped”); pointed rings in front of and behind the horse; below, a beaded rosette centred on a bezant and a sort of snake or centipede. DT.S 164A = this specimen!; Gold – 6.8 g – 20 mm – 10 h From a Drouot/Rossini auction, 30 May 2008, lot 63. This is the specimen featured in the Supplement to the Nouvel Atlas, no. 164A. The only known example of this rare variety of the so-called ‘beaded triangle’ stater (DT.163). On an oblong flan, with a golden patina, showing all the details of this design. Very Fine to Superb.
