Description
GAUL - CELTIC Remes / Belgium. Quinar or light denarius ATEVLA / VLATOS, variant 2 with a shamrock and an ear of corn, ND (60–45 BC). Obv. AT[EVLA] before the bust. Winged bust facing forwards, wearing a torque, with a Romanised head turned to the left. Rev. VLATOS. Animal (horse or bull?) raising its head to the right; an ‘esse’ above its back, a clover between its legs (and an ear of corn lying beneath the exergue line). DT.641 - LT.7187 - Scheers 306; Silver - 1.74 g - 15.5 mm - 12 o’clock Acquired from Jean Vinchon Numismatique in 2004. The strike is clear, though slightly off-centre, with few missing areas. The patina is grey with bluish highlights. Almost Superb. Series 83 of the New Atlas brings together all these inscribed coins, both homotypic (bearing the legends ATEVLA / VLATOS, SENODON, and CALEDV) and related (CVPINACIOS / VLATOS). Whilst the traditional attribution is to the Remi, the reality appears to be different; the finds are distributed across Belgium, from the coast to the Rhine, almost always associated with pre-Augustan military camps (with a camp or sanctuary nearby). The authors of the New Atlas favour “the hypothesis of a supplementary coinage intended for the auxiliary units of the Roman army, which circulated, thanks to military personnel in northern Gaul, during the second half of the 1st century BC”.
