GAUL - CELTIC Remes / Belgium. Quinar or light denarius related to the Belgium type, Class II, var. 1, with the inscription CALEDV ND (60–45 BC). Obverse: A draped bust wearing a diadem, facing left, with a bun and two plaits falling down the nape of the neck. Reverse: [CA]LEDV. A galloping horse with a girth, facing left; below, a coiled snake with a triangular head and a long, forked tail. DT.645 - LT.7174 - Scheers 377; Silver - 1.79 g - 14 mm - 11 h Acquired from J.-L. Cougnard in 2018. A specimen of remarkable quality, undoubtedly the finest known example. Well-centred and well-struck, with a grey patina. Superb. Simone Scheers notes that “the finds are too scattered to allow for attribution. The presence of this quinarius in the Vernon hoard establishes the start of minting as before 45 BC”. This type is classified as ‘related’ to the ATEVLA-VLATOS – SENODON – CALEDV series in the New Atlas, with attribution to Belgium
