GAUL - CELTIC The Treveri. A quinarius featuring a dancing figure, Class IV ND (early second third of the 1st century BC). Obverse. Small dancing figure on the right, head turned back with shaggy hair, both arms raised (holding a torque in the left hand and a branch (?) in the right, all set against a grid-pattern background. Reverse: A horse on the right, turning its head backwards, with an oversized eye; a chevroned line around the edge. DT.206 - LT.9396 - Scheers 349; Silver - 1.78 g - 12.5 mm - 1 h A well-centred and complete specimen of this type. With a black patina. Superb. These silver coins, with their highly distinctive style, are grouped within Series 33, ‘Types from the Moselle (Treveri) and the Rhine Valley’. This variety featuring a dancing figure is relatively little known, and the variants have scarcely been described. S. Scheers distinguishes between two classes: depending on whether the figure is holding a sort of snake (Class I) or simply has his hand raised (Class II). On rare specimens, the figure may have a small torque hanging from his belt (DT. 206, Scheers 348) and the reverse is sometimes adorned with a small ring beneath the horse’s head (Scheers 349). Our specimen does not feature the snake on the obverse, but a fine beaded cord in its place
