GAUL - CELTIC Britain, Atrebates and Regni, Epaticcus (20–40). Light denarius or diobol featuring an eagle facing right. Obv. EPATI. Beardless head of Hercules facing right, wearing a lion’s skin; behind, a dotted ring. Rev. Eagle standing face-on atop a serpent, looking to the left, wings outstretched; in the field, to the right, a dotted ring. Spink 356 – Mack 263 (Catuvellauni) – ABC 1346; Silver – 1.2 g – 12 mm – 12 h Acquired from [Alain] Weil in 2005 in Évreux. The strike is slightly off-centre. A few scratches on the obverse. Slightly concave blank. With a collector’s patina. TTB / Superb. Epaticcus or Epaticcos was the son of Tasciovanos and the brother of Cunobelinos, kings of the Atrebates in the south-west of present-day England. He belonged to the line of rulers of the Catuvellauni and the Trinovantes. Epaticcos appears to have been responsible for Verica’s departure from the island of Britain for Rome, where his intervention is said to have triggered the conquest of the island by Emperor Claudius in 43.
