ROMAN REPUBLIC Anonymous. ND didrachm (280–276 BC), Metapontum? Obverse: Head of Mars facing left, bearded and wearing a helmet; behind, an oak branch. Reverse: ROMANO. Armoured horse’s head facing right; behind, an ear of wheat. RRC.13/1 - RSC.4 - Sear 22; Silver - 7.57 g - 19 mm - 12 h Acquired from CGB in 2014 (brm_330665). The blank is irregular. Shows even wear, with a dark patina. Very good condition. This issue of silver didrachms dates from the period of King Pyrrhus’s invasion of Italy at the request of Taranto. The attribution to Metapontum is based on the Greek style reminiscent of that city’s coinage, notably the resemblance of the helmeted Mars to the bust of Leukippos, founder of Metapontum (SNG Delepierre 328–331, for example). The reverse is, of course, inspired by Carthaginian coinage, specifically the Siculo-Punic tetradrachms of the 4th century in Sicily
