ROMAN REPUBLIC Fonteia, Manius Fonteius. Denarius ND (85 BC), Rome. Obverse: MN. FONTEI – C. F. Laureate head of Apollo facing right; below, a thunderbolt. Reverse. Within a laurel wreath, the winged infant Jupiter seated on the goat Amalthea to the right, two pilei above and a thyrsus in the exergue. RRC.353/1c; Silver – 3.93 g – 18.5 mm – 3 h From CNG Auction XXXII, 7 December 1994, lot 305, with its original label. On an oblong blank, the strike is slightly off-centre. Lightly cleaned with a patina showing golden highlights. Superb. The Temple of Vejovis, of Etruscan origin (Young Jupiter), was situated in the lower part of the Capitoline Hill on the Asylum, within a section of the Tabularium. This temple housed a statue of Jupiter as a child riding the goat Amalthea, which is depicted on the reverse of this denarius.
