ROMAN REPUBLIC Cnaeus Pompeius Magnus [Pompey the Great] and Cnaeus Calpurnius Piso, pro-quaestor. ND denarius (summer 48 BC), Spain. Obverse: CN PISO – PRO Q. Head of Numa facing right, head encircled by a band inscribed NVMA. Reverse: MAGN / PRO. COS. In the centre, a galley prow facing right. RRC.446/1; Silver – 3.78 g – 17 mm – 6 h From Elsen catalogue 274, 2015, no. 73. High relief on a slightly convex flan. Slight wear with a lovely collector’s patina. Superb. The mint master, Cn. Calpurnius Piso, served as legate and pro-quaestor in Cisalpine Spain, whilst Pompey was proconsul there. The prow on the reverse symbolises the alliance between the forces of the Western legions and the Eastern fleet. It also commemorates Pompey’s earlier naval victories. As for the obverse, the head of Numa recalls the claims of the Calpurnii family, who claimed to be descendants of Calpus, son of Numa.
