Julius Caesar (60–44 BC). Denarius ND (47–46 BC), North Africa.
Obverse: Head of Venus wearing a diadem, facing right.
Reverse: CAESAR. Aeneas advancing to the left, holding a palladium in his right hand and Anchises on his left shoulder.

From the Weil sale of 7 November 2000, lot 80, subsequently in the François Charrin collection and purchased from CGB, eMonnaies, September 2015 (brm_364728).
On a large flan of remarkable quality, with only minimal flattening on the high reliefs. Beautiful collector’s patina. Superb, in mint condition.
According to Virgil’s *Aeneid*, Aeneas fled the city of Troy carrying his lame father Anchises. They arrive in Italy, where their descendants, Romulus and Remus, will go on to found Rome. On this denarius, Caesar highlights the origins of the gens Julia through the mythical founders of Rome.
