ROMAN REPUBLIC Julius Caesar (60–44 BC). Denarius ND (47–46 BC), North Africa. Obverse: Head of Venus wearing a diadem, facing right. Rev. CAESAR. Aeneas advancing to the left, holding a palladium in his right hand and Anchises on his left shoulder. RRC.458/1; Silver – 3.88 g – 18 mm – 7 h The strike is slightly off-centre on the obverse but complete on the reverse. The patina is old, with iridescent and bluish highlights. Superb. According to Virgil’s *Aeneid*, Aeneas fled the city of Troy carrying his lame father, Anchises. They arrived in Italy, where their descendants, Romulus and Remus, would go on to found Rome. On this denarius, Caesar highlights the origins of the gens Julia with the mythical founders of Rome
