ROMAN REPUBLIC Petillius Capitolinus. Denarius ND (43 BC), Rome. Obv. PETILLIVS / CAPITOLINVS. Eagle on the right perched on a thunderbolt. Rev. Hexastyle temple (Capitol), with quadrigas on the roof and decorations between the columns. RRC.487/2a; Silver – 3.95 g – 20 mm – 4 h On a wide flan, with a slightly off-centre strike. With a patina showing golden and bluish highlights. Almost Superb. Minted in the name of Petillius Capitolinus. Ancient historians recount that a certain Petillius Capitolinus was entrusted with the guardianship of the Temple of Jupiter on the Capitoline Hill; he was given the epithet ‘Capitolinus’ because of his duties. He was accused of having stolen the god’s crown, but thanks to his friendly ties with Augustus, he was acquitted.
