Description
ROMAN REPUBLIC C. Cassius, with M. Junius Brutus and P. Cornelius Lentulus Spinther. Denarius ND (42 BC), itinerant mint in Asia Minor. Obverse: LEIBERTAS / C. CASSI IMP. Veiled bust of Liberty wearing a diadem, facing right. Reverse: LENTVLVS SPINT. Jar and lituus. RRC.500/5; Silver – 3.61 g – 19 mm – 6 h From the Elsen 105 auction, 12 June 2010, lot 195. Two exchanger’s marks on the obverse. Fairly well centred, with a grey patina. TTB. P. Lentulus Spinther was quaestor to Marcus Junius Brutus. Following Caesar’s death on the Ides of March 44, Brutus set off for Crete and then Asia Minor, where he gathered his forces in preparation for battle against the forces of the triumvirate comprising Octavian, Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus. Minted before the Battle of Philippi in October 42, which saw Brutus’s defeat and subsequent suicide.
