ROMAN REPUBLIC
Octavian (44–27 BC). Denarius ND (29–27 BC), Brundisium or Rome.
Obverse: Bareheaded head of Octavian facing right (as Apollo).
Reverse: IMP – CAESAR. Naval trophy comprising two spears and a shield, an anchor and a rudder arranged in a cross, resting upon a ship’s prow.
RIC.265a; Silver – 3.83 g – 19.5 mm – 9 h
On a wide flan, the strike is off-centre on the obverse but the portrait is complete, as it is on the reverse, where the design is also complete and well-detailed. With a grey patina. TTB / Superb.
The naval military trophy on the reverse could be identified as the Column of Actium, erected by the Senate in honour of Octavian’s victory over the forces of Antony and Cleopatra at Actium in 31 BC.
