ROMAN REPUBLIC Octavian (44–27 BC). Denarius ND (autumn 30–summer 29 BC), Brindisi or Rome. Obverse: Head of Apollo wearing a laurel wreath, facing right. Rev. IMP CAESAR. Octavian, as founder of the city, veiled and wearing a priestly robe, ploughing to the right with a yoke of oxen, holding a whip in his left hand and the handle of the yoke in his right hand. RIC.272 – RSC 117; Silver – 3.74 g – 18 mm – 6 h On a slightly oblong flan. The obverse shows slight wear; the reverse is slightly concave and well-preserved. TTB to Superb / Superb. The reverse refers to the founding of Nicopolis in Epirus by Octavian during the Actium campaign. This scene, in which the founder ploughs with oxen, evokes the Roman custom of establishing the boundaries of a new city by marking them with a pomerium, or sacred furrow.
