Claudius (41–54). Denarius for Nero ND (50–54), Rome.
Obverse: NERONI CLAVDIO DRVSO GERM COS DESIGN. Draped bust of Nero facing right.
Reverse: Shield resting on a vertical spear, inscribed: EQVESTER / OR - DO / PRINCIPI / IVVENT.

Acquired from Dumez in 2015.
The strike is slightly off-centre on the reverse but centred and clear on the obverse, featuring an interesting profile of the young Nero. With a grey patina. Very Good.
In March 51, Nero, aged thirteen and the adopted son of Claudius, was officially declared an adult, thus taking an important step towards Agrippina’s goal of seeing her son – born of her first marriage to Cnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus – succeed the Emperor, who had become her second husband. Nero was granted the title of consul-elect, the honours of the Praetorian Guard and the equestrian order, and was also enrolled as a priest in Rome’s four religious colleges: the pontiffs (simpulum), the augurs (lituus), the quindecimviri sacris faciendus (tripod) and the septemviri epulones (patera)
