Antonia (+39), mother of Claudius. As ND (41–50), Rome.
Av. ANTONIA – AVGVSTA. Bust facing right, draped, with hair tied at the nape of the neck.

On a fairly wide, slightly irregular flan. A fine bust of Antonia on the obverse and her son offering a sacrifice on the well-detailed reverse. Very Fine to Superb.
Antonia the Younger was the daughter of Mark Antony and Octavia, the elder sister of Octavian. She was brought up within the imperial household and, in 16 BC, married Nero Claudius Drusus, Tiberius’s younger brother, who would go on to lead a victorious campaign in Germania. Her life was marked by numerous tragedies: she never knew her father; her husband died in 9 BC as a result of a riding accident; her eldest son, Germanicus, was probably poisoned in 19; and in 31, she is said to have starved her daughter, Livilla, to death after discovering her involvement in a foiled plot to overthrow Tiberius. She also harboured a deep contempt for her youngest son, Claudius, whom she considered intellectually deficient. When her grandson Caligula became emperor in 37, he is said to have treated Antonia with such disrespect that she took her own life. Claudius, despite the coldness he had experienced from his mother, nevertheless had commemorative coins struck in her honour, having bestowed upon her the title of Augusta.
