Nero (54–68). Denarius featuring Agrippina the Younger, undated (54), Rome.

Struck on a small blank, with fine relief. The fields have been lightly polished. TTB.
Agrippina, having engineered the removal of Britannicus—Claudius’s illegitimate son—from the line of succession in favour of her own son Nero, born of her marriage to Cnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus, initially acted as regent for Nero during the first months of his reign. The earliest coins of Nero feature the busts of the Emperor and his mother. Although he owed his throne to his mother, the relationship between son and mother rapidly degenerated into a power struggle which intensified from 55 onwards. Agrippina began discreetly to support her stepson Britannicus, Nero’s rival for the throne, in order to threaten him and regain control over her son. However, the Emperor poisoned the young man during a family dinner in February 55. In 58, after banishing his mother from the imperial court, Nero had her put on a boat which sank. Agrippina managed to escape, but she was found on the shore and murdered by three men
