Nero (54–68). Denarius featuring Agrippina the Younger, undated (55), Rome.
Obverse: NERO CLAVD DIVI F CAES AVG GERM IMP TR P COS. Side-by-side busts on the right of Nero and his mother, Agrippina the Younger.
Rev. AGRIPP AVG DIVI CLAVD NERONIS CAES MATER / EX SC. A quadriga of elephants on the left, pulling a chariot with a platform on which the deified Claudius and Augustus are depicted, radiate, holding sceptres.

A fine strike, slightly off-centre, featuring attractive busts of the son and his mother. With a grey patina. Very Good to Superb.
Agrippina, having arranged for Britannicus, Claudius’s illegitimate son, to be removed from the line of succession in favour of her own son Nero, born of her union with Cnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus, initially acted as regent for Nero during the first months of his reign. The earliest coins of Nero’s reign feature the busts of the Emperor and his mother. Although he owed his throne to his mother, the relationship between son and mother rapidly deteriorated into a power struggle that intensified from 55 onwards. Agrippina began discreetly to support her stepson Britannicus, Nero’s rival for the throne, in order to threaten him and regain control over her son. However, the Emperor poisoned the young man during a family dinner in February 55. In 58, after banishing his mother from the imperial court, Nero had her put on a boat which sank. Agrippina managed to escape, but she was found on the shore and murdered by three men
