The scene depicted on the reverse relates to the founding myths of Rome and shows the she-wolf suckling the twins Romulus and Remus in the Lupercal cave, situated at the south-western foot of the Palatine Hill. The twins are said to have been suckled by the she-wolf until the shepherd Faustulus discovered them and took them home to his wife, so that they might be brought up by her. The cave itself served for a long time as a place of festivities and worship, from the origins of Rome until the end of the 5th century AD.
