Obverse: D N IOHAN - NES P F AVG. Bust wearing a diadem, draped and clad in armour, facing right, seen in three-quarter profile.
Rev. VICTORIA - AVGVSTORVM / R - V / COMOB. Victory advancing to the right, one leg raised, holding a cross-topped globe in her left hand and a crown behind her with her right hand.
RIC.1904; Gold – 1.42 g – 12 mm – 6 h
A very slight loss of metal and a trace of a test mark on the edge at 8 o’clock. With a golden patina. Fairly rare. Superb.
On the death of Honorius, Flavius Ioannes, primicerius (First Secretary at the court of Ravenna), had himself proclaimed Augustus. Theodosius II refused to recognise him and sent an armed expedition, whilst Boniface, Count of Africa, cut off Rome’s wheat supplies. John attempted to enlist Hun mercenaries, but they arrived too late. Theodosius’s army captured Aquileia, where Galla Placidia and Valentinian (III) had taken up residence, and then Ravenna in May 425. The usurper was brought back to Aquileia, sentenced to death and paraded through the circus. His right hand was first cut off, then he was tied to a donkey before finally being beheaded.
