Calabria, Taranto. Half-shekel (drachma), Punic occupation, in the name of the magistrate Sokannas ND (212–209 BC), Taranto.
Obverse: A helmeted horseman in military dress on a horse facing right, holding a palm frond; beneath the horse, ΣΩΚΑΝ - ΝΑΣ.
Reverse: TAPAΣ. Taras seated on the left on a dolphin, holding a kantharos in his right hand and a trident in his left; in the field on the right, an eagle.

NGC Ch AU 5/5 3/5 brushed (8769658-027).
On a wide, slightly oblong blank, with a centred strike. This specimen has seen virtually no circulation, with a slight grey patina. Superb in Proof condition.
Commemorating the occupation of Taranto by Hannibal Barca’s Carthaginians, following the defeat at Cannae in 216 BC, a crushing blow for the Romans. The Romans did not, however, capitulate and would recapture the city of Taranto in 209 BC.
