Phoenicia, Byblos, Ozba’al or Azbaal (c. 400–340 BC). Shekel (reduced Phoenician standard) ND, Byblos.
Obverse: A Phoenician pentekontéris on the left, surmounted by three hoplites; beneath the waves to the north-east and a swimming seahorse to the left, with a murex shell below.
Reverse: OZBOL MLK GBL (“Ozba’al, King of Gebal” in Phoenician). A lion leaping upon a stag, to the left.
HGC 10, 133 – Betlyon 14; Silver – 13.27 g – 25 mm – 3 h
On a fairly wide, slightly irregular flan. The strike is well centred, with the full legend. With all its details and only minimal signs of circulation. With golden highlights. Superb.
