Mauretania, Juba I (60 BC–46 BC). Denarius ND (c. 49–46 BC), Utica.
Obv. REX. IVBA. Bearded bust, draped and wearing a diadem, facing right, holding a sceptre.
Rev. IOBAI HMMLKT (in Punic script). Octastyle temple on a platform, with a globule in the centre.

With a grey collector’s patina. A very fine portrait. Superb in mint condition.
Juba I, like his father Hiempsal II, was an ally of Rome and Pompey the Great. His monetary system was based on the Roman denarius, quinarius and sesterce, probably struck at Utica. In 49 BC, his army defeated Caesar’s Roman legions, commanded by Curio. In 47 BC, Caesar was in Africa and faced Mettelus Scipio, general of Pompey’s legions. Caesar won the Battle of Thapsus, whilst Juba retreated to Zama, where he died in battle against Marcus Petreius. He was the father of Juba II, who was raised in Rome by Octavia
