GAUL - CELTIC Carnutes. PIXTILOS bronze coin, Class VII, featuring a winged female horseman (c. 50–10 BC). Obverse: Male head facing right, hair held back by a headband, with a crest and curled locks falling vertically down the neck; inscription ‘PIXTILOS’ in front of the face. Reverse: Winged horsewoman facing right, an ‘esse’ beneath the horse. LT.7081 - DT.2471 - RIG.224f - IDF CAR 11; Bronze – 2.65 g – 16 mm – 2 o’clock On an oblong flan, with a trace of the casting spout cut at 9 o’clock. The strike is centred and in high relief, very complete. The patina is dark green and glossy. Superb in mint condition. According to the New Atlas, the PIXTILOS series is classified within the ‘peri-Aulerci group of PIXTILOS and TITIVS’. Highly Romanised, this series is said to be “better represented amongst the Aulerci Éburovices than amongst the Carnutes”. Its origin is thought to lie south of the Seine, from the Carnutes-Éburovices border to the coast. This bronze coin featuring a female horseman is the lightest and most common in the series. The armed female horseman (whether winged or not) is quite rare on Gallic coinage, though not unknown elsewhere, particularly in Armorica and the Centre-West.
