ROMAN REPUBLIC C. Memmius c. f. Denarius ND (56 BC), Rome. Obv. C. MEMMI. C. F. Head of Ceres facing right, crowned with ears of corn. Rev. C. MEMMIVS / IMPERATOR. Trophy, at the foot of which stands a captive, kneeling on one knee with his hands bound behind his back. RRC.427; Silver – 3.52 g – 17.5 mm – 7 h NGC Ch XF 5/5 3/5 brushed edge cut (6645986-019). Well struck, correctly centred. Minimal wear and a patina with golden highlights. Superb. This denarius alludes to the obverse depicting the Ludi Cereales or Cerealia, the Games of Ceres. The reverse, meanwhile, is certainly linked to the victories in Bithynia and Pontus of C. Memmius L. f. (99–46 BC), the coin maker’s uncle, who was praetor in 58 BC and propraetor in Bithynia, as well as a politician and poet. C.
