Following the death of Pompey the Great, the struggle for power passed into the hands of his sons. Gnaeus Pompeius, or Pompey the Younger, minted coins mainly in Spain, where he died in 45 BC at the Battle of Munda in Baetica. Sextus Pompey paid tribute to his brother on bronze coins before a silver issue became possible, struck by Q. Nasidius, which depicts Pompey the Great as Neptune and features two spectacular reverses: one showing a naval battle scene and the other depicting a galley. Sextus Pompey, a Republican and opponent of the Second Triumvirate, was then regarded as the son of Neptune and on the verge of capturing Sicily, whilst carrying out acts of piracy in the Mediterranean. He was defeated by Octavian at the Battle of Naulochus in 36 BC and was assassinated the following year. Q. Nasidius served Pompey as commander of 17 ships during the siege of Marseille in 49 BC.
