Titus Caesar (69–79). Aureus ND (76), Rome.
Obverse: T CAESAR IMP VESPASIAN. Laureate head facing right.
Reverse: COS V. A cow walking to the right.

One of, if not the finest example of this type! The obverse is well centred, whilst the reverse, slightly off-centre, is slightly concave. Minimal handling marks cause slight browning of the fields, with minute scratches and hairline marks. Superb in proof condition.
The reverse of this coin may derive from the type featured on an aureus of Augustus, struck in an unidentified mint, probably in the East, and may be linked to one of the four sculptures of heifers by the Greek sculptor Myron. Mattingly (BMCRE, p. xxxviii) unequivocally links the reverse of this coin to Emperor Vespasian’s relocation of this statue from the Portico of Apollo—where it had been placed by Augustus—to his new Temple of Peace
