Caracalla (198–217). Aureus ND (201), Rome.
Obverse: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG – PON TR P IIII. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust facing right.
Reverse: CONCORDIAE AETERNAE. On a crescent, side-by-side busts to the right of Septimius Severus, with a halo, and Julia Domna, wearing a diadem.

Probably from the Karnak Treasury (1901), then the Vogel collection; Hess Auction 194, 25 March 1929, lot 896; and the Jean Vinchon Numismatique auction, 9 December 1983, lot 221, then 15 November 1989, lot 153, then 5 May 2019, lot 2891, and finally NAC 125, 23 June 2021, lot 744.
With a beautiful patina with golden-brown highlights. A set of three fine portraits of the imperial family. Rare. Superb, in mint condition.
This magnificent aureus, with its masterfully executed portraits of the imperial couple on the reverse and the designated heir to the throne on the obverse, clearly affirms that the dynastic continuity of the Severi is assured, following the terrible years of civil war
