ROMAN EMPIRE - ROMAN Probus (276–282). Aureus ND (281), Rome. Obverse: IMP PROBVS P F AVG. Laureate and cuirassed bust, seen in three-quarter profile facing left, holding a spear on his shoulder. Rev. VIRTVS AVG. The Emperor in military dress, seated on the left on a curule chair, holding a sceptre in his left hand and receiving a globe in his right hand from Military Virtue, who is helmeted and holding a spear; behind him, Victory holding a palm frond and crowning the Emperor; in the background, a soldier with a military standard; in the exergue: a crown. On a large flan with excellent centring, showing only slight cracking at 4 o’clock. Impacts on the rim at 11 o’clock on the right-hand side. With its original lustre covered by a delicate patina. The obverse is remarkable for its precision and style, whilst the reverse is most interesting.
