Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maximianus, a general under Diocletian, was elevated to the rank of Caesar in 285. He was granted the title of Augustus in 286. The Eastern government, under Diocletian, established its capital at Nicomedia, whilst Maximian Hercule ruled the western part of the Empire from Milan until their simultaneous retirement in 305. When Maxentius rebelled against Galerius at the end of 306, he recalled his father, who had commanded armies for decades, as Senior Augustus. Our aureus is a coin struck by Maxentius to celebrate his father’s return. The reverse, facing the same direction, depicts ‘the triumphal entry of the Elder Emperor (Senioris Augusti)’ into Rome, either at the end of 306 or, more likely, at the beginning of 307 following the victory over Severus II and his capture
