Constantine I (307–337). 1/4 solidus medallion (festaureus) ND (335), Thessaloniki, 5th mint.
Obverse: CONSTANTINVS MAX AVG. Head wearing a diadem, facing right.
Reverse: VOTIS XXX within a wreath; in the exergue (mint mark).

NGC Ch AU 5/5 4/5 die flaws (5778822-001).
Minor strike flaws on the obverse. The strike is centred, with the reeded edge clearly visible. This specimen has seen very little circulation, with the fields barely tarnished and covered with a delicate golden patina over the original lustre. Superb.
This gold medallion weighs 1 ¼ solidus and corresponds to an aureus according to the weight standard of Diocletian’s reform. During the Constantinian period, these multiples were issued only on festive occasions at the imperial court, hence their Germanic name ‘festaureus’. The event commemorated by our specimen is the 30th anniversary of Constantine I’s reign, which the emperor celebrated in July 335 with grand festivities in the new capital, Constantinopolis, which he named after himself
