SOUTH AFRICA George V (1910–1936). Half-sovereign, burnished proof 1923, SA, Pretoria. Obverse: GEORGIVS V; Reverse: G: BRITT: OMN: REX: F. D. IND: IMP:. Bare head facing left, signature B. M. Reverse: St George slaying the dragon, signature B.P.; in the exergue (date); (mint) on the edge. S.4010 - Fr.6; Gold - 19 mm - 12 h NGC PF 63 (8584665-009). On a burnished (PROOF) blank, with mirror-finish fields. Barely a few hairline scratches in the mirror-finish fields. Rare, with an estimated mintage of 655 pieces from the sets struck for the mint’s opening. Superb in Proof condition. Officially established on 14 December 1922 by King George V, the Pretoria Mint opened its doors in 1923. The influx of gold did not really begin until about a year later, as Marsh indicates in his book, *The Gold Sovereign* – with a single deposit of gold, in the form of old jewellery, which was valued at 406 pounds and 9 pence. The refined gold was used to mint sovereigns and half-sovereigns, the latter exclusively in Proof quality.
