Obverse: AMET ZOGU. Bare head facing left, with two stars below.
Rev. ‘SHQIPNI ALBANIA’ and ‘FR. 100’ in the exergue. A charioteer driving a two-horse chariot to the right; signatures ‘G. ROMAGNOLI’ and ‘A. MOTTI INC.’; in the exergue (date) and (mint).

Ahmet Muhtar Bej Zogolli, or Ahmet Zogu, was born in 1895 to a powerful feudal clan chief from the Mati region and his mother, an heiress to the old Albanian nobility. He studied in Constantinople before returning in 1911 to become a governor. During the First World War, he fought alongside the Austro-Hungarians, who promoted him to colonel before his return to Albania in 1919. He then entered politics and, after quelling a rebellion, became Minister of the Interior. Later, as a general and commander-in-chief of the army, he consolidated his power and became Prime Minister in 1922, whilst marrying the daughter of Shefqet Verlaci, leader of the Conservative Party. In 1924, he resigned following a financial scandal but quickly returned, with the help of the Yugoslavs, to stage a coup. He proclaimed the Republic and was elected President for a seven-year term in 1925. As the leader of a strong government, he modernised and Europeanised the country, notably with the help of Mussolini’s Fascist Italy. On 1 September 1928, Ahmet Zogu, having amended the Constitution, proclaimed himself King of the Albanians under the name Zog I.
