Gold medal, 24-ducat size, of the Order of Merit of the City of Vienna, known as the Salvator Mundi medal, by Konrad Lange, burnished strike (PROOF) ND (after 1846), Vienna. Obverse: SALVATOR - MVNDI. Bust of Christ facing left, with a radiant halo; signature K. L. Reverse: SVB VMBRA - ALARVM TVARVM [In the shadow of thy wings]. View of the city of Vienna, surmounted by a crowned double-headed eagle and, in the exergue, within a cartouche: MVNVS / REIPVBLICÆ / VIENENSIS between the shields bearing the coats of arms of Austria and Vienna. Gold – 83.72 g – 42 mm – 12 h This is the second-highest grade (4)! Presented in an exceptional red morocco leather case (138 x 138 mm), featuring the coat of arms of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in polychrome enamel. NGC PF 62 CAMEO (8769684-001). Hallmark ‘A’ within a circle. Burnished (PROOF) blank with satin-finished reliefs and mirror-like fields, showing only slight fingerprints and minute marks. Superb in mint condition. Since 1575, the city of Vienna had the right to award a medal for exceptional services rendered to the city. In 1846, the die, created by Anton Widemann in 1777, was so worn that another had to be made ‘for official use’. The medallist and deputy at the Vienna Mint, Karl Konrad Lange (born in 1806 in Geislingen an der Steige, near Ulm, and died in 1856 in Vienna), was entrusted with this task. Fine hairline cracks can be seen on almost all Salvator Mundi medals: these special medals were obviously not struck in advance and then distributed, but were struck individually at the Vienna Mint as and when required. The dies designed by Konrad Lange were used from 1846 until the last award in 1919. Before striking, the dies were cleaned of minor impurities by brushing.
