Obverse: ФЕРДИНАНДЪ I - ЦАРЬ НА БЪЛГАРИТѢ. Bust facing left, signed R. MARSCHALL.
Reverse: ЦАРСТВО - БЪЛГАРИЯ / 22 SEPT. 1908. Between two branches, a crowned shield flanked by 100 - ЛЕВА; below (date).

In 1908, Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Prince of Bulgaria since 1887, exploited the existing tensions between the great powers to declare, in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria’s independence and the creation of the Kingdom of Bulgaria, taking the title of Tsar himself as Ferdinand I. The date of independence is recorded as 22 September 1908 according to the Julian calendar (5 October 1908 according to the Orthodox calendar)
