Saïd Ali (1885–1909). Riyali, 5-franc denomination [by A. Patey] AH 1308 (1890), A, Paris.
Obverse: Circular inscriptions [Saïd Ali, son of Saïd Omar. May God, the Most High, protect him]. In the centre, depicting the sultan’s monogram: a Turkish sabre in its scabbard, attached at the end of the hilt to a cangiar; on the left, a bow; on the right, a revolver, a cannon, and the date [sana (year) 1308 (1890)]; below, a spear, an arrow and two decorations.
Reverse. In two lines: [Protectorate of the French Government, glorious]. Within a garland of palm and laurel, tied with a double rosette, the French flag bearing ‘R-F’ and the Comorian flag crossed in saltire, flanked in the first field by an inverted crescent, with a star in the centre; in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, a star. Below, in two lines: [D’Anghezidia Dynasty. May God protect it]. In the exergue: (varying) (mint) (varying).

Embossed edge with three rings, featuring 24 stars. Only 2,052 specimens minted. The fields have been barely cleaned. Superb in Proof condition.

Clerc, Bulletin No. 533 of the Cercle numismatique du Val de Salm, 47th year, June 2025 [available online: https://www.academia.edu/129426388/Les_monnaies_du_sultan_Sa%C3%AFd_Ali_de_la_Grande_Comore]. Using the Archives, he was able to establish the precise number of coins struck (2,150, of which 2,052 were issued) and to describe in detail the designs engraved by A. Patey, reproducing Sultan Saïd Ali’s monogram in the form of a coat of arms within the field
