Description
DOMINICA British West Indies. Pierced piastre of 11 bitts (equivalent to 8 Mexican reales) (1798) minted in 1794 FM, Mexico, then Dominica. Obverse: CAROLUS. IIII. – DEI. GRATIA. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust, facing right; below (date). Reverse: .HISPAN. ET IND. REX. (mint mark). 8 R. (variant). Crowned shield, between two columns with the banner PLVS – VLTRA. KM.3.3 (of KM.109) – Jambu/BnF 265; Silver – 23.34 g – 39 mm – 12 h NGC VG 8 (8769670-028). With a face value of 8 shillings and 3 pence or 11 local bitts (approximately 11 French livres). Only around 5,000 coins were modified. The centre has been pierced and removed to form a moco (see EAuction MDC 12 no. 776). Shows regular wear with a dark patina. Very Good.
