Dedicated to the FOUNDATION OF THE BOULAQ MUSEUM AND THE EGYPTIAN ANTIQUITIES SERVICE. Bust of Mariette on the right, with the Boulaq Museum in the background. Cartouche inscribed MARIETTE BOULOGNE-SUR-MER 182 BOULAQ 1881; signed S. E. VERNIER 1905. Reverse: IN SEARCH OF THE SERAPEUM. A labourer carrying out archaeological excavations and bringing their finds to Mariette; signed S. E. VERNIER. Forrer VI pp. 225–235 – Coin 1967 945; Bronze – 156.55 g – 60.5 mm – 12 h NGC MS 66 BN (6642263-001). Hallmarks (horn) BRONZE. Beautiful brown patina. Almost uncirculated. The Boulaq Museum was the first museum of Egyptology established in Cairo, Egypt, in 1863 by Auguste Mariette. The museum soon became too small, and new galleries were funded by Viceroy Ismail Pasha to mark the opening of the Suez Canal. Auguste Mariette (1821–1881) was, alongside Champollion, one of the two founding fathers of Egyptology. A professor and journalist, he discovered Egypt before devoting himself entirely to it. He was sent on a mission in 1850 to acquire manuscripts but spent the money on excavations; in doing so, he discovered the Avenue of the Serapeum at Saqqara, featuring 141 sphinxes and several temples. He was given a state funeral in Egypt; his funerary monument stands in Tahrir Square, in the gardens of the Museum.
