SPAIN Philip II (1556–1598). 2 escudos ND (1566–1587) – D, S, Seville. Obverse: PHILIPPVS· II· DEI· GR[ATIA]. Crowned shield flanked by (mint) / (assayer) and II. Rev. + HI[SP]ANIARVM. REX. Jerusalem Cross within a quatrefoil with trefoils in the corners and flanked by four small rings. Aureo & Calicó 827–828 – Fr.169; Gold – 6.66 g – 25.5 mm – 11 h NGC AU 55 (8772189-013). With a fairly wide flan, featuring almost complete inscriptions. The assayer’s mark of Melchor Damian, a square ‘D’, appears on our specimen to resemble an ‘I’ or a ‘T’! Beautiful golden patina. Superb.
