Menelik II (1889–1913). Gersh, variety with the right foreleg raised EE 1889 (1897).
Obverse: Legend in Ethiopian script. Crowned bust of Menelik II facing right, with the date below.
Reverse: Legend in Ethiopian script. Lion facing left bearing the Empire’s banner; the denomination in the exergue.

This type exists with the lion raising its left forepaw (standard type) or its right forepaw, as on our specimen (rare variety). Struck with an obverse die that is starting to break and shows slight signs of die clash. Close to its mint condition. Almost Proof.
